Natural Outdoor Hot Springs in Hokkaido (Aug, 2000)

There are over 100 free, natural outdoor hot-springs in Hokkaido. However, bathing has been banned in some of them, due to nature conservation in recent years (Maybe it's better to check with local tourist offices beforehand). Here we introduce the ones regarded the best.

Rausu-cho, Menashi-gun
Tel. 01538-7-2111 iRausu-cho Tourism & Commerce Sectionj

Seseki Onsen (hot spring) (mixed bathing)
A hot spring by the seashore, just before the end of the road at Aidomari that, on fine days, commands a view of Kunashiri Island from the natural rock-pool bath. Submerged during high tides, hot water springs from a crack in the rock to create a natural bath during low tides. Timing is of the utmost!

Aidomari Onsen (mixed bathing)
A wooden bath originally built to warm up the local fishermen and seaweed gatherers. Take care not to trouble them during the fishing season between July and September.

Kuma no Yu
Situated next to the River Rausu by the Shiretoko Pass route 334. This hot spring has a fenced-off bath for females as well as a large mixed-bathing area.

Teshikaga-cho, Kamikawa-gun
Tel. 01548-2-2191iTeshikaga-cho Tourism & Commerce Sectionj

Wakoto Onsen Outdoor Hot Spring (mixed bathing)
Situated before the Wakoto Peninsular on Lake Kussharo, this hot spring is large enough to accommodate about 20 people at once and also has a changing room. Tends to get quite crowded in summer, but the view of Lake Kussharo is great.

Suna Yu (mixed bathing)
This sandy stretch along the Kussharo Peninsular by route 278 is a popular tourist spot and becomes very crowded. Hot water springs up from the sand when even a shallow hole is dug. The scenery too is beautiful, but swimsuits must be worn.

Kussharo Han no Yu, Kotan no Yu (virtually mixed bathing)
Situated by route 278 on the Kussharo Peninsular. Male and female baths are separate, but the rocks between are low, making them pointless. Lake Kussharo is within an armfs length away.

Nibushi Onsen
A 15m-diameter hot spring surrounded by rural beauty on the edge of Lake Kussharo. Changing rooms are available, but bathing is mixed. @

Todohotsuke-mura, Kameda-gun
Tel. 0138-86-2111@(Todohotsuke Commerce Section)

Parks (for walking, picnicking and relaxing) in Sapporo

Bankei Shimin no Mori (Citizens' Woodland), Chuo-ku

Nopporo Shinrin Koen, Atsubetsu-ku
Over 30km of varied and interesting trails provide the perfect place for bird-watching, as well as providing the opportunity to spot squirrels and foxes that inhabit the forest.

Nishioka Park, Toyohira-ku
A treasure-trove of plant and animal life. Fireflies, as well as many species of dragonflies and birds can be seen from the wooden footpaths that wind through the marshes of one of Hokkaidofs leading habitats.

Makomanai Park, Minami-ku
Dozens of pathways thread their way through the silver birch and fir trees, and across a wide expanse of lawns. A trail also connects the park to the nearby Monami Park.

Monami Koen, Minami-ku
A great park along the banks of the Toyohira River, to escape to when the weather gets hot. Also known as one of Sapporofs leading spots during the season of autumn leaves.

Takino Suzuran Park, Minami-ku
Take your pick from the wide array of waterfalls, clear streams, woodland and great views that make up this park, set in 130 hectares of undulating hillside. The waterfalls are particularly beautiful. A treasure-trove of wild flowers, birds, animals and insects, and also boasts a youth lodge, view tower and outdoor cooking facilities. A great place for a wide variety of activities from hiking to auto camping.

Mt. Moiwa Public Ski Grounds, Minami-ku
Trails between the ski slopes and the summit provide a great place for mountain hiking. Or the pistes themselves, with no one else in sight, are perfect places to relax.

Moerenuma Park, Higashi-ku
169.9 hectares of highly acclaimed parkland created in 1988 from the designs of the internationally renowned sculptor, Isamu Noguchi. An interesting park!

Ishiyama Ryokuchi (Greenland), Minami-ku
Situated by the side of Route 453 on the way to Lake Shikotsu, the park is divided into the north side, with its excellent views, and the unique exposed rock-face scenery of the south side. The south side also has quite an interesting layout.

Maeda Shinrin Park, Teine-ku
Almost half of the park is woodland and a 600m-long canal stretches out in a perfectly straight line from the view-lounge towards Mt. Teine. On either side are 320 poplar trees. An area of trees and tree stumps also provides a great place to play and the lawns are expansive.
